In 2014, Groundwork Denver opened a hydroponic greenhouse in North Denver. The space, which became lovingly known as Groundwork Greens, helped improve hyper-local access to fresh, healthy greens in an area where residents face many environmental injustices. Among these was a lack of accessible grocery stores or healthy food options - what is known as a food desert or food swamp.
Each year, Groundwork Greens grew 3,000-4,000 lbs of produce that was distributed to neighbors through a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) model. Along the way, youth joined us as paid members of the team to learn about urban farming and food justice, and to work alongside our staff farmer to grow food for their neighbors.
Through 2023, Groundwork Greens provided community-based food support, primarily in the Aria development off of I-70 and Federal. The land underneath the greenhouse was eventually sold, and Groundwork Denver passed ownership of the greenhouse to another local nonprofit focused specifically on food justice.
