In October we had a group of volunteers come out to the Rocky Mountain Arsenal and help the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service collect seeds of native prairie plants inhabiting the Arsenal. Seed Collection Saturday January 21,, Noon - 2:00 pm Help Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge staff gather flowering shrub seeds to be used in prairie restoration projects throughout the Refuge. These plants provide late season nectar sources for pollinators like bats, birds, bees, and butterflies while they are in the area. Recommended for ages 8 and up. Please dress for weather. This project is taking place on a very special day - Earth Day! In honor of Earth Day, Volunteers for Outdoor Colorado will work with the City and County of Denver and the Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge to construct 6,600 feet of new trail along First Creek. Volunteers, ages 10 and up, will build the trail by hauling and spreading an aggregate material known as "crusher fine." Tasks will be easy-to-moderate in difficulty. Come assist Rocky Mountain Arsenal Refuge staff by removing some of our most wanted weeds! Plants, such as Mullein, Musk Thistle, and Houndstongue are trying to take over and we need your help! All ages are welcome to come get their hands dirty! We will be weeding for 1-1.5 hours so please be sure to wear closed toed shoes, long pants and bring water. Assist Refuge staff in enhancing habitat for pollinators by planting native wildflowers along the Lake Ladora Trail. These plants will provide an ongoing nectar source for butterflies, bees, and other pollinators. Wear closed toe shoes, bring water, and sunscreen. Recommended for ages 12 and up.
